Learning RX - Rich Frieder

During the 2001-2002 recession, the Small Business Administration (SBA) reported that the U.S. economy lost nearly 2.7 million jobs overall. Interestingly, new and existing businesses with fewer than 20 employees gained over 850,000 jobs during that period. Our current recession has lost almost 7 million jobs since the recession started in 2007 and that number is still growing. What happened to job security and the "security of a paycheck"?

Since the mid-1990s, small businesses have generated 60-80% of net new jobs.Small businesses create jobs.  We help create small business owners.

Our story this month is about a corporate executive that had the desire to control his future while helping his community and creating jobs for others.

Congratulations Rick and welcome to the world of entrepreneurship!

As the former Chief Marketing Officer at Deluxe Corporation, Rich was looking forward to leveraging his experience to create more personal wealth and flexibility through business ownership.

Although his wife Adele has a wonderful idea for a children's recreational facility, they were inclined to take the route of franchising for their first venture to take advantage of established support and systems.

Ideally, Rich wanted to be in a position to step away from the business by his mid-50s to start another venture, do more mission work or simply cut back.

Rich, who has strong people skills and is a very creative marketer was drawn to both business service and retail models.  Recognizing there were pros and cons to each path, he quickly narrowed the field to business consulting and learning services.

Ultimately, he chose a retail franchise called LearningRx.  LearningRx learning centers provide cognitive skills training that focuses on how students learn, empowering people of any age to learn faster and easier.

The demand is high.  Since they opened over a year ago, Rich and his wife Adele,  have been booked with appointments at their center located at the intersection of County Road 42 and Marketplace in Savage, MN, about 15 miles from downtown Minneapolis.

If you know of someone in the area who has a loved one who is struggling with learning barriers, the folks at LearningRx would be happy to offer a complimentary consultation.  Visit their website or give them a call at 952-226-1115.

Recent articles suggest that 2007 job levels won't return until late 2011 or 2012 and some specific jobs will never return. We are in a new world economy that has created this "New Career Economy".

Rich didn't want to be a statistic of the unemployment sunami. He has taken control of his career and is now his own boss. He is part of the stimulus that will help turn our economy around. He will now be signing the front of the paycheck, rather than the back.

  1. Honesty: Whatever ethical plane you hold yourself to, when you are responsible for a team of people, its important to raise the bar even higher. Your business and its employees are a reflection of yourself, and if you make honest and ethical behavior a key value, your team will follow suit.
Ability to Delegate: Finessing your brand vision is essential to creating an organized and efficient business, but if you don’t learn to trust your team with that vision, you might never progress to the next stage. Its important to remember that trusting your team with your idea is a sign of strength, not weakness. Delegating tasks to the appropriate departments is one of the most important skills you can develop as your business grows. The emails and tasks will begin to pile up, and the more you stretch yourself thin, the lower the quality of your work will become, and the less you will produce.
Communication: Knowing what you want accomplished may seem clear in your head, but if you try to explain it to someone else and are met with a blank expression, you know there is a problem.
Risk Taker: A person is responsible to take risk for his company for growth and development. There have been few leaders who later turned out to be successful entrepreneurs in their respective fields like P Mohamed Ali.
