Express Employment Professionals - Terry Schacht

Why would a seasoned business "professional", that has managed companies, bought and sold businesses, who has an accounting degree and MBA, be interested in a franchise? Why wouldn't he just start something on his own?

Our E-Story this month is about a man that found that the support and training of a franchise organization combined with the  sharing of information between franchise owners, was the perfect fit for him to utilize his skills and achieve his goals. One doesn't alway have to "invent the wheel" to be successful. Utilizing your skills to make the "wheel" run smoothly, is often a shortcut to success.

Join me in welcoming Terry Schacht to his newest entrepreneurial adventure and the world of franchising.

Congratulations, Terry!

Terry Schacht

Terry Schacht has owned or managed a variety of businesses over the past 27 years. He began his career in public accounting; first as a auditor and later as a consultant to small business owners in the service and distribution industries. When he moved to the private sector, he served in financial and operational roles with various companies as a controller, COO and VP of Finance and Operations. Years ago, with the help of a local bank and venture capital firm, he purchased a data marketing and list processing service bureau serving direct marketing companies such as Dell Computer, LensCrafters and Lab Safety.

Because of a slowdown in the direct marketing industry, Terry sold his business and was looking for a new career direction.  His wife had seen an article in a local paper about how I help aspiring entrepreneur's find a business or franchise that best meets their goals and needs. She cut it out for Terry and suggested he call. At that point in Terry's search, he had little interest in franchising, so the article sat on his desk for a month. But as it turns out, Terry has a very wise wife.

When Terry called, he had spent about six months on a job search and was also looking for other businesses to purchase.  But the job market was slow and business opportunities were limited.  He admitted that the franchising concept was new to him, but he was willing to keep an open mind and learn about possible options that might be a good fit..

Terry and I explored a variety of business options that would best utilize his skills. We narrowed our search to  Express Employment Professionals.  Terry had plane tickets to fly to their corporate office to consummate the deal when he received an offer to be CEO of a startup Cellular Phone company with ownership incentives. We both knew this was an offer that Terry couldn't refuse.

Terry and I kept in touch.  Several months later, Terry called me during his hour and fifteen minute commute home.  The promises made during the initial hiring were not kept and he had resigned from the business. Shortly after that, the company filed for bankruptcy.

In Terry's own words, "I contacted Marty and Express and restarted the process. Both Marty and Express welcomed me back with open arms. I felt like I almost had never left. But it was good for me because it gave me the opportunity to convince myself that Express was a good choice for me.  I liked the type of companies that I'd be working with, hours of operation, investment required and the business product. I also evaluated the likely return on investment and felt Express was the best financial opportunity."

Terry's initial plan was to give it 5 years. At that time he would evaluate his next move; either sell it and move on to his next business adventure or expand his business. As we approach year five, Terry is leaning toward buying another territory.

"Express has been a great investment and I'd do it again. Using Marty to walk me through the process certainly helped. I'm not sure I would have pulled the trigger without Marty's follow through.  He kept me on target."

Terry's owns and operates the Mequon office of Express Employment Professionals located at 11126 N. Cedarburg Road. Since February 2004, the Mequon office has worked with 125 local companies and employed over 1300 people in a wide range of office, customer service, warehouse and manufacturing positions. His vision is to help clients in Ozaukee, Washington and northern Milwaukee counties find good workers and help local job seekers find jobs with great companies.
